Of course I disagree? Fourth?! He should be in spots one through ten
Seriously though, I don't know who most of those characters are. No clue who number one is. Sam and Max are good. Professor Layton isn't nearly as interesting a character as Tex, I don't know why he was so high on the list. I'm glad LA Noire's protagonist wasn't number one. I didn't much care for him.

It seems a lot of the entries on the list was biased by the game(s) they appeared in, and that it wasn't about just the characters themselves.
They also included police detectives as well as private detectives. That being said, they never specified that they would concentrate on just the one.
But you all know me. You know who my #1 spot choice is.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
I think there was definitely some filler. I don't understand some of their choices. By there logic, any character that solves any mystery should count as a detective. What about Monkey Island, Full Throttle, or Grim Fandango. Those had characters solving mysteries too.

I would also add Max Payne and Ethan Thomas of Condemned to the short list of detectives. Condemned 2 was awful, but the detective work in Condemned 1 made the game more interesting than a slow crawl through thug central.
