Would you mind getting rid of our newest spam bots? I don't know what all they do in Kiev, but nothing that seems Tex related.
Thanks!
Jen

I think its best to Private Message him, he might read it quicker (and possibly even get an email notification... not sure). But I think he's been away recently as a couple of us have PM'ed him recently about bots. Maybe we need a moderator, just in case as an extra pair of eyes.

I'm still around.

I think I've been able to ban all the bots so far, but if there're any I've missed, point 'em out to me and I'll get them too.

i get the names with large numbers are probably bots, but what about the more normal sounding names?
How do you guys tell a bot? Is it the profile?

Yes... the ideal giveaways are their URLs... which usually contain links to Pharmaceuticals or Porn sites.

or casinos, if I remember correctly, one of the first to appear was linked to a casino.
Maybe the sign-up to the forum could be moderated. The person would simply have to write a quick thing to be e-mailed to James or other moderator that he points. A simple e-mail telling why one wants to join is enough, to make sure it's human

Cool, thanks James.
As to registration. phpbb allows you to set it so that you have to input a code from an image (usually slightly warped text) to help confirm you are human. I think this helps to cut down on bots since its tougher for them to decipher an image, especially if the text is deformed slightly. Maybe this could be switched on?
Also you can tell phpbb to require users to activate their account using email... but then I cant remember, maybe the forum already does that.

As far as I know, the image code thing is already on. I'm hoping to install the latest version of phpBB sometime soon, possibly this weekend, so maybe that'll help a little too.

Perhaps I'm clueless, but I can't seem to understand why they matter. I never seen them post anything. What's the big deal?

Some have posted, mostly nonsense.
As I am speaking only for myself, I consider this group kind of like friends and family. It bothers me to see people with malicious intent make their mark on the board. It's like some drunk jerks crashing your evening with the buddies.
But that's just my humble opinion. I'd delete every trace of them if I could!!!!
