"Until URU"

Just want to mention the fact that the MYST community is currently working very hard towards reviving URU, the online MYST game from a few years ago. Since the cancellation of URU Live, the community, in cahoots with Cyan Worlds, have kept the ball rolling with "Until URU," (UU) which is basically a very limited version of what Cyan had hoped to accomplish with URU Live.

Recently, a third party has given limited funding to Cyan Worlds, to set up and run an Official UU server or "shard" (All previous shards have been run by fans). Based on the response to this new "D'mala shard," the shadowy third party may be interested in funding a full-blown revival of URU Live.

I have always been a big fan of the MYST series, and I know a lot of you all are as well. And I know we can all sympathize and support the efforts of a fanbase trying to revive a beloved game. :) So, if you have a copy of URU lying around, or are inclined to purchase one (the game can be found for next to nothing at Amazon, and other stores), I would encourage you to fire it up, install the "Until URU" patch from http://plasma.cyanworlds.com and join the growing number of folks down the the D'ni caverns! There are a couple of us from UOTM down there already, and we'd love to see more!
I'm there! Well, I must pruchse URU first. Being a big MYST fan, I never really intended to buy URU for some reason... but now that it is back live again I will probably check it out.

At the moment I am very busy playing Oblivion on Xbox 360.

I'm already there. In fact, I meet James down in the caverns for the first time. :D But I'm with James, anyone whos interested, I can asure you its well worth your while. Its alot of fun to meet people there, and go to different places with them. The envoirments that Cyan has created is very engulfing, and very well done. I hope to see you down in the caverns. Later.

I've wanted to dive into URU ever since i played the demo. However being the stubborn person that i am, i felt i needed to beat the first 3 Myst titles beforehand.

Still stuck on Riven
I gots a webcomic! http://yetanothercomic.com
Now, of course, there is also Myst IV and V... although Myst V takes place after the timespan of URU... or so I've heard. I have yet to play Myst IV or V myself...  :)

I'm in the same boat as Cub. There are other games I'd like to get, but first Oblivion must be dealt with.

It's funny you should mention this now, because I fired up URU a couple of days ago, just to rummage through the worlds again.

What inspired me to play URU again was that I just gotten back from watching Stay Alive at the movies. The Stay Alive game (in the movie) involved onlilne, multi-player gaming with options of either 1st person or third-person views and the avatars were very similar to the ones in URU. It sort of made me long for the old game again.

Anyway, when I fired it up this time, I couldn't get the graphics to work right. Strange, because I played all the way through URU and Path of the Shell without any problem, but now my screen gives me some weird pixelation along, what I think are, the wireframe structures under the textures.

It can't be my hardware because it used to work fine. I must have changed some kind of graphic setting somewhere. Anybody ever seen this kind of thing?

If I can get the graphics working again, I'll sign up.
Probably something went wrong with a recent driver update.

I know that even though updates are supposed to gradually improve the performance of the software/hardware with each new release, every now and again a new driver release will cause something to go wrong.

the best thing to do is download the latest version of your Graphics Card drivers and install them (make sure you un-install your old ones first by going to add/remove programs, and finding the drivers, they should be names under something like ATI/Nvidia display drivers, depending on what hardware you have).

If that does not work, try going to the manufacturer's driver archives and rolling back your drivers one by one until it works again, following the same steps as above. Considering this is a more time consuming process, you might be better off remember around about what date you played the game when it worked fine and find the driver release that corresponds with that particular time frame... and hopefully it will work out fine.

If all else fails, go to the Tex Support section here a UTM... I am sure there are plenty of technie dudes that can help you figure out every nook and cranny of your problem!

Well, I don't know what I did, but today it's working. Maybe it needed a reboot or something. Also, I tried a different combination of graphics settings in the URU startup options. I tried several combinations a couple days ago and nothing worked. Maybe I'll try changing them back to see if I can make it not work again. Then I'll know. But most likely it was just a Windows quirk and needed a reboot.

Anyway, now I can go to the UU site and see what's happening.
Glad you got things working. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see you down in The Cavern. :)
I was looking at the FAQs on the Until URU webpage. There are a couple of things that aren't clear to me. Since you are doing it already, you should know.

One of the FAQ questions was: Is single player supported?
Answer: No. The single player game might work...please backup your sav folder before you install Until URU.

I'm not sure what this means. If I install the Until URU patch, will I not be able to go to my single player locations anymore, like all the Path of the Shell locations, etc?

I also foget some of the URU lingo. Is the Kagi key that thing you wear on your wrist which gives coordinates and activates doors and equiptment?

Hey DrPaul. Let me see if I can help you. If you install the patch ontop of your PotS game, than you will be enabled to enteract with people on line in Ae'Gura (the D'ni city). Now, you can still visit your old ages that came with URU, To D'ni, and PotS. But there are some bugs in the system that makes some ages unplayable. And for that reason, they tell you to make a back-up of your player. Me personaly, I made two install versions of URU. I made one with URU and PotS, and the other one I made with URU and Until URU ontop of it. So I have to switch between different games with single player and multiplayer.

You won't need a Kagi Key. A Kagi Key was what was needed before the opening of the Cyan run Until URU shard "D'mala." Kagi Keys were sold for $5 so people could access different shards (shards are servers basicly). But now, if you know someone who is in the cavern, (like me :D ) then all you have to do is ask someone to send you a invitation, and they'll do it. Its just that easy. Anyway, I hope this helped. Later.

Hey Sowden, thanks for the info. Now I have more question. That's what forums are for, right?

I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons between two installations or relying on a backup sav directory. I've got a 40Gb HD with about 7GB free. My current URU installation seems to be about 2.5GB. I'm not sure if I want to use another 2.5G for a second URU installation.

Suppose I just make a backup of my current URU sav directory. That's only about 400K. Then I do the UU patch on top of my URU, To D'ni and PotS. I should then be able to interact with people in Ae'Gura, but how does my backed up sav directory fit into all of this? That is, how does it help me to still be able to play single-player? Do I have to uninstall UU and move my old sav directory back in for single-player, then re-install UU when I want to get back to multi-player?

If I do a dual install, is there any advantage/disadvantage to doing the UU install on top of URU, To D'ni and PotS instead of just on URU? Do I have to go all the way through the original URU ages again to get to D'ni? That was a LOT of work.

Where are the UU people hanging out mostly?

Sorry for all the questions, but I put so much time and effort into getting though all those ages and tracking down those $%^& spheres, I don't take losing it all lightly.
Let me see if I can help you some more.

What you said is basicly it. If you want to make a back-up of your old saved files, then thats how that will have to work.

The only advantage of having a dual install is if you are still playing single player like I am. If you have a dual instalation, you can play both. If you have one install with Until URU, then you will still be able to go to those ages, but they will be buggy. Its basicly this: URU To D'ni + multiplayer + bugs = Until URU. When you first arive on the shard, you will probably have to find all the Journeys in the Cleft, but when you go to your Relto, all the D'ni books will be there.
Where are the UU people hanging out mostly?
People usualy hang out in Ae'Gura, but that can be quite laggy. If I meet some friends there, then I try to get them to go to some remote age so that theres not as much lag, but they usualy hang out in Ae'Gura. I hope this helps, and I'll see you in the caverns :D . Later.

Sowden's right... installing the "Until URU" patch will negate any Path of the Shell content, if you install it into the same directory you currently have URU installed in. PotS content is not available as part of Until URU. If you want to retain your single-player profile, you should backup your "sav" folder to a safe location before you install the UU patch.

As for where people hang out, I'm usually either in my Neighborhood (URU Obsession) or in the city (Ae'gura), which seem to be the hotbeds of activity at the moment. You'll find the greatest number of people (and be supporting the cause of relaunching URU Live) on the official Cyan shard, called D'mala.
