Unofficial Tex Murphy

Ok, I've been a daily reader / infrequent poster (this makes 49) on this board for many a year, and I've come to know you all. But there's a burning question I've been dying to ask for many moons (not Killing Moons, fortunately), so I'll ask it now:

Hey, Cub. . .is it pronounced "kyoo - base", 'kub - ace", or something different?

While I'm at it. . .would you like to divulge where your username came from? Might be an interesting story.

While I'm at it #2: maybe we could ask others how they chose their interesting usernames. Might be an interesting thread (except for non-creative dimwits like me who use their real names (ooops, the secret's out!)).

I hope I'm not prying.

My nicks, handles and usernames for most games where such is a requirement (mmorpgs, online fps-games etc) however, are SpiderJay and Farl. Short for Farlander.

It's the name of a product.

Me? My last name.

Vracar is right... It is the name of a peice of software by Steinberg which does studio recording.

Cubase is pronounced 'Q-base'.

I originally came accross this alias becuase before I began getting involved in all these online communities I only ever used my old black & white Atari STe with Cubase v2.2 (of course, no internet)... so when we did get the internet I figured it would be fitting the base my alias around my main motivation to use computers in the first place (at the time) and I guess it has stuck with me ever since. Now I use Cubase SX-3 and am still going strong. Mind you I only ever regularly visit 3 online forums... this one being my favourite.

Not a terribly interesting story, but a story none the less. You guys were the first to start calling me 'Cub' (I think it was Jim who started it) and I have appreciated it ever since. Hence, why I sign my posts with it...

My username is the first initial of my first name (Jonathan), and the last name of Edward Carnby from the Alone in the Dark series. Just a name I came up with a million years ago when I first got internet.

My story isn't all that interesting although my username can be explained in 2 ways - one realistic way and one I guess unrealistic way.

1. Realistic explanation

If you take my username - read the letters backwards and remove the letter "a", you get my first name which is Morten - I just thought it would be fun to put in the letter "a" so the username wouldn't sound like "netrom" which doesn't mean a thing. Netroam sounds a bit cooler in my opinion

2. Unrealistic explanation

I've been a kind of geek with computer since I was 3-4 years old or so, so of course when the Internet first arrived I also spent a lot of time surfing around, began doing homepages, chatted and all that, so in a way I was "roaming" the net hence my username "netroam"


I guess explanation number 1 makes more sense than the 2nd

When I saw the title "Unrealistic explanation" I was expecting something along the lines of:

"Back when my and my friends were rookies in the intergelactic space fighter squad, I was often given the job of roaming the Arcadian outer defense networks. This was a simple routine job that a lot of rookies got as part of their outer space fighter training), and some of my mates saw fit to give me the name Netroam for fun. 5 years later, and after graduating from the ISFS at the top of my fleet class, I was offered a position to captain the one of the new GammaFleet Space Cruisers (there were about 5 of them built, which would aid in out exploration of the Gamma sector of the Neuronia Cluster) and decided to name the cruiser Netroam, after my nickname. I guess it has stuck with me ever since."

My nickname comes from the main character in "Ender's game" by Orson Scott Card. Pretty good SF book

My screen name comes from two loves. Mystery Science Theater 3000 (Gypsy was one of the robots, also had a Manx cat named Gypsy) and Tex Murphy games (Pernell from Lucia Pernell).

I also use Chelsee Bando on a couple sites. I tend to pick screen names that reference MST3K, Tex games, movies most often.

When I was an assistant manager at a fast food chain, there was this incredibly hyper, loopy guy (all those drugs got to him) named Corey that was a cook. One of his many quirks was that, supposedly so he wouldn't have to stop long enough to think of your name, he would call everyone (male or female) "Jerry" or "Jerry Dan". Sometimes he'd change it up with rhyming names like "Gary" ,"Harry", or "Larry". Sometimes he'd call the store and need to speak to someone there, saying, "Hey, can I speak to Jerry?" Quite a character, but a good worker.

It was rather contagious. We all called him Jerry, and many of us since then have gotten into the habit of calling other people "Jerry Dan". I rarely call my own brother-in-law anything else, and some of my friends have now gotten into the habit of calling me Jerry.

So that's mine.

Well for years i've used the handle "Turnip" when gaming. It was based off a cartoon character called SirTurnip i drew in highschool. I often use Turnip as a forum name but it's fairly arbitrary and is taken a lot of the time.

This happened for the first time a couple years back. I needed a new handle. Well, i used "Turnip" as a gaming handle. Back then, i was in a clan known as "AtoMiC". Using my clan name mixed with what my original handle was, i came up with "Atomicvegetable". I also use a shortened version on some forums called "Atomicvege".

with internet safety growing up, i was only in junior high when i started posting, and for some reason this message board (well, the old one) wanted a last name, so i just gave my middle initial. not too interesting either but i think it just looks cool now.

plus "v" has some fun sci-fi references, like the new "v for vendetta" or the 80's sci-fi miniseries "v"
