Oddities

We were all amazed when UAKM came out and that for many reasons. However, let's have a little fun.

Today, we buy DVDs instead of tapes when new movies become available (at least I do). UAKM, in an effort to be well ahead of its time and in lieu of the fact it takes place in 2042, placed us in a place called GRS. Upon searching, we ran into what kind of recording that seemed to be OUR future but is practically no longer in existence?

Hope that question wasn't too long or confusing.

Also, can you think of other oddities similar to the one above? If so, share it.

I remember in UAKM going into the Electronics Shop and looking around at everything. Tex makes a comment when you examine the computer: "Its an old 1286 with a super wowser VGA monitor" or something like that. Far as I can tell, nobody is going to use the phrase 1286...most people probably haven't said anything having to do with '86's since pentiums came out.

You mean the video player in the conference room? Yeah, probably GRS cutbacks, spent all their money developing the virus and the tech budget ran out.

By the way:

Pentuim = 586
Pentium Pro through Pentium M and new Intel Core = 686
Pentium 4 = 786

and so on...

Good points, people. I was specifically thinking of the Laser Disc. Once touted as the future in video and audio technology, they are fairly obsolete, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm Melting is right... seeing as most processors on the PC today still use the x86 technology, every processor is pretty much a variation of the x86 model name.

Also Jim, I agree about the Lazerdisc.. although in UAKM, they were a lot smaller (the size of todays current DVDs)... but the real Lazerdiscs were a lot larger... I remember going over to a friends house and seeing Independance Day on Lazerdisc and being wowed. Of course, everybody knew then that a disc that large would not take off.

That's true...guess what I was trying to say was that even if PC's these days still have an X86 platform, they aren't referred to as such anymore. naturally, people say "i've got a pentium 3" or whatever.

But it's not too late to turn it around! We are responsible for making Tex's world as real as possible...without the whole World War IV thing...

I have a 986. Anyone know when the 1086 is supposed to break on the scene?

If you have a 986, then may I recommend 'Links 986'?

It's some sort of croquet software.

What was I thinking? I don't have a 986 - I have a 786!
