How would would imagine a tex mulltiplayer game?
i was wondering about that...
It's difficult to make a multiplayer adventure game without ruoining either the multiplayer part or the adventure part...

PS: yes

I've never played a multi-player game before, so I guess I'm not qualified to comment, but. . .Tex is a private eye, so he's. . .like. . .private, you know? So how would that work?

Anyway, everyone would want to be Tex, so that would be a problem, eh?

You never know... it could be converted into one of those mass multiplayer online titles, where every character is controlled by someone in the world. This way, to outsmart the villains you would actually have to outsmart real people to win. So in other words, if I was the villain it would be a very short gaming experience.

-Cub. =o)

Hmmm.
Yes, it would be a problem.
That should be a game with lots of Texs.
And you could wave at the other Texs in the street, or shoot them.

Well, maybe i played quake too much since 98. :?

I'll have to quit that...

Or if someone could make a Tex mod for quake.
I'd like to play the drunk prophet in the back alley.
My weapon would be broken bottles of bourbon that i could throw. :D

Tex Murphy online? Hmmm....how would it work...

For one thing, you can't be Tex. It's like Star Wars: Galaxies. You can't be Luke, because there would have to be harsh rules on who could be Luke, as there is only one Luke.

So, that's where you'd have to make a character. You are the detective! Combat at the very most will have a Blade Runner-esque feel to it. Considering the developments in AI of late, it might be possible to make a...bot killer. Give the bot killer a motive, a way of life, and provide clues that lead to the bot.

Lots of Tex's? We could put the game in Texas. Then we would have "Tex's In Texas."

I honestly thought long and hard on this question and have come to a conclusion that would probably work, but might not satisfy everybody.

Tex Murphy would be in the future, and he would run his own investigative firm. Different cases would be on the blackboard in the "lobby area" of the office, and players, playing generic versions of PIs would go on excursions and trying to solve the cases. All the cases would be long and hard cases, and new ones would be added as the popularity of the game increased. The players would have to work together because all the evidence would be collected by different people who would have to collaborate on the evidence and make hypothesis on where to go next, or solve eloborate puzzles, etc ...

Basically like an old online Text Mud they used to have on AOL called Modus Operandi, except once a case is solved, it's solved.

I think it would be great.

Ha! Good old MO. I remember those days. It's still around, you know, just no longer associated with AOL.

Really?! I had no idea! I bet it's got a pay to play structure though, doesn't it? Most of the really good MUDs do anymore. The best one was of course MO, but I also played a LOT of Terris. Hell, I remember I was a druid in that game, and the gamemasters of the game gave the druids special powers. We had these druid totems that were teleportation devices and could walk unharmed through rooms full of beasts because we were "providing the balance" to the world, so we viewed the monsters and the humans as equals all relevant to the whole. It actually was more fun for me, because I could focus more on the secrets and quests in the game
without having to resort to leveling up, and building a fighting character. The druids were more roleplaying "talky" storyline building characters. I missed that too, but eventually it got too expensive. I mean when a text game costs about the same as Ultima Online, what are you going to play?

But I loved Modus Operandi. Back when it was on AOL there was a great bunch of people, and it was a great time passer.

Yeah, it (last I checked) was about $15 a month. Never played Terris, but there was a good little group in Morada back in the day.

I tried to play MO a bunch of times way back in the day, and could never figure it out. Now I feel sort of silly.

eh, I got stuck in a damn cave in BSD adventure.
I feel silly too...
Maybe i should try to play it again?

Is there any reckless soul who would be interested in playing it?
I could quickly port it to windows if several people were interested i guess.

(no promises, but it's really old cold, but it was in OpenBSD source tree last time i checked. and if it's not to messy to port the input system to the windows console API it should be doable... unless they do some other weird stuff)

that is if nobody did it before :)

EDIT: the code is mainly 30 years old C code which has been fixed for the past 25 years... Now this is somewhat scary in fact...

I just recently made a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, and it's really not that hard. I say, let's make a first-person shooter out of it, and let Chandler avenue be the arena. Imagine going head to head against your favorite characters - all at once; Pug, the Chameleon, Ferrell Pus! Ion Paint the Golden Gate Hotel, Redeem the Slice O'heaven! Show Nilo who's boss with the Flak Cannon, and last but not least, pull an InstaGib on Jackson Cross! YEAH!!!

Bests, Rockefeller 8)

Ask Access I've been looking at some Overseer resources and it looks like it might have originally had a multiplayer function.
