Tex Murphy Overseer - Problem in Cell Block

Hello all. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one still playing the Tex Murphy games!

I am just about done with Overseer, and have had relatively few problems. I am playing the CD version (didn't know how to get the DVD version running, until now). I got past the error message at the gallery thanks to this forum, but now am getting an error when going thru the cellblock. I read a post somewhere that there is no known fix for the problem, and the only way to continue is to get a saved game from someone and carry on after that point.

So, does anyone know of a fix, and if not, where can I get a game save?

I appreciate any help - I know this is going to be my last adventure with Tex, but I don't want it to end so soon! :(

What is the error message you are getting?

No error message - just a crash to the desktop. I follow the little flying robot around the corner, and then get the crash.

I've tried playing with a number of settings, but nothing seems to make any difference.

i ve heard u have 2 disable the MIDI, pass the point where u get the crash, and then reenable MIDI, but i m not sure if that would fix it...sorry

You could try changing the Display mode from 640 X 480 to 800 X 600. And if that doesn't do it, email me: [email protected] and I'll send you a saved game.

Fandorin and Nilo - thanks for the suggestions...

I've already tried disabling MIDI with no effect. I'm already at 800 x 600, but I'll try changing the resolution to something else and try that.

Nilo, if this doesn't work, I'll email you - thanks.

WoW, this is strange, I am playing the game for the first time on my Windows XP and I even got the DVD to work this time (note: I have played the game before on my old Windows 98 computer using the CD Roms), and I am at the SAME spot as you and the game crashed. I just shut off the MIDI and the game worked fine and was able to turn the MIDI back on when I got to Cell Block C, which is a good thing as you know.

Well, maybe the way I shut off MIDI was wrong. I just hit the mute button. Is there another way to shut it off?

This method worked at the gallery, so I assumed it was the way to turn it off. Maybe there's another way???

Thanks Fandorin and FFPlayer...

It looks like all you have to do is Mute the MIDI, so I was doing it correctly. No luck there :(

I went to the site at Quandary Help, and read thru the fixes they had for Overseer. About the only thing there that applied and I had not tried was to disable hyperthreading. Unfortunately, that too did not work.

Nilo, I sent you an email for save games. Looks like you're my only hope?!

Edit - I heard back from Nilo, he is having email issues, but will send me the save games as soon as he gets the issue resolved.

Well, my visit to the site Fandorin posted was worthwhile, even if it did not get Overseer working. I bought Riven (the sequel to Myst) years ago but never loaded it until I had a system with XP, and I could never get it to work. There was a fix listed on this site that got Riven working, so once I finish with Overseer I'll be able to get back to playing the Myst series again.

Thanks for the help!

I wish I had seen this post a few months ago. I had the exact same problems. I am glad to hear that it will (apparently) work on XP as I now have XP and the DVD enabled.

Well, I got the game saves from Nilo (Thanks Nilo!) and that got me into Cell Block B. Of course, my first act after getting there was to (unknowingly) open the door back to Cell Block A, at which time I got the error again. Oh well, next time I knew better and was back to playing again.

Thanks everyone!
