Re-experiencing UAKM

Well ... I just thought I'd try to revive all your nostalgic experiences with UAKM. I finally got the game working properly under XP a couple of days ago and every night since I've been sitting in front of the computer playing a little bit - not that I spent a whole lot of time each night but still - it's more than I normally use on a computer game ;)

Right now I've just begun Day 4 (A Code, a Tode and a Cigarette Load), and I'm about to find out more about the Chameleon and search the Colonel's office.

The first 3 days were a pure joy to relive - especially with a fully functional DosBox which only nagged a bit with the dialogue at times, but I can live with that. I even got to experience my "signature situation" (Hot and Cold ... That's what it does to me ... :D). Aahhh - the memories!

Anyone else who has played the game recently and care to make some following statements? ;)

I have never bothered trying to get UAKM and Pandora to work via Dosbox or any platform in XP... I still have an old Win 98 machine on standby specifically for the classics with all the TM games loaded onto it... I thin kthe last time I played UAKM was 1.5 years ago, which is way too long... as soon as this semester is over and my work hours are changed to the day shift I will definitely love to revisit the games during the evenings.

Full time work, full time uni, and part time freelancing leves literally no time to enjoy anything anymore. But it's my choice so I guess I can't really blame anyone but myself.

Although I do love hearing folks talk about the games, as it bring back memories of my own and that always feels good, so thanks for the post.

I am also on day 4 of my recent replay.

I just got to the part where I'm going to infiltrate G.R.S. ... That has always been the place where I panicked the most because it really takes patience and a lot of save games to get past the security watch both in the hallway and in the different rooms, but I'm looking forward to it - nice with a bit of "Tex-citement" :)

The G.R.S always freaked me out when I was younger... you will laugh but from about the 50 times I played the game, 30 or so attempts would have be stopping play before G.R.S becuase I was too scared to challenge it... it would take a few weeks before I could coax myself into it.

The same went for Pandora's Roswell, although the anxiety only lasted a couple of hours... but I did kinda make it worse, by cranking the sound and dimming the lights.

When I forced my friend to play UAKM, Pandora, and Overseer, he seemed to enjoy them, but froze up at all the "timed-moving-bad-guy" puzzles. He made me get him through the GRS area in UAKM, Roswell in Pandora, AND the security droids in Overseer. I guess some people just can't handle those types of puzzles.
I've played UAKM on DosBox as well and it works ok. It runs a bit slow but I'd rather run it on my own computer than to have to sit down at the kids' Win98 machine. It's been... oh, maybe almost 2 years since I've last played it. I'll have to dive into it again soon.

I remember the alien entity part of Roswell in Pandora the first time I played it. I played it in the basement after midnight with most of the lights off. The thing that really creeped me out was this beep that would occur every once in a while. That sounds weird, but I'll tell you why.

I'm totally deaf in one ear, so I can't tell where sounds are coming from. I didn't know the beep was coming from the computer. I was just playing down there, in the dark, late at night and I'd keep hearing this noise. I'd get up, turn on all the lights and look around...couldn't figure it out. Turn off the lights and go back to the game. But I felt like 'something' was down there, hiding in the dark. Creepy.
I'd play UaKM if I could get it to work. Now I can get it to run, but it crashes after about a minute.

In the mean time, my warlock needs leveling. Can't reach sixty sitting in an inn all day.

Vracar: I got the game working quite perfectly except for a few minor dialogue issues where it stutters a bit, but otherwise everything's great ... mail me if you would like to have it up and running perfectly and I can tell you what to do

DrPaul: I do remember that noise, you're referring to - I would also pause the game to look around and see if there was something in the room or someone on the way to the room back when I played it the first few times. It did actually creep me out a bit too :)

I'm glad to hear someonw else was affected(?) by that noise. It's kind of funny.
GRS - I died there more times than anywhere else, except the security laser grid before going into Roswell. My computer ran a bit slow and the mouse was erratic, at best. Those laser beams zapped me more times than you could imagine.

The alien devoured me a 100 times before I finally made it. Whew! Brings back a LOT of great memories.

I can't remember my first experience of the GRS offices too well... I'm not one for puzzles really though, so I probably found it tricky. But it does get you wondering whats around the corner and if the mechanical eye will pop out from somewhere suddenly.

The Roswell area was quite an experience. I don't know when the Klixx version was released but assuming it was not long after the original release then I was probably only about 10 years old when I played it. So you can just imagine! But saying that... it still creeps me out, especially with the eerie music etc. The first time I played it though, and the alien was chasing me, my heart was literally racing! The whole isolation atmosphere of being down underground so far (like a grave) with noone around except piles of dead cobwebbed corpses (each with personal mementos like letters home etc.) was very impacting. And the knowledge that this alien entity only needs to touch you and you're dead whilst you have to race through and solve a puzzle is very thrilling in a scary way. I never wanted to have to go through it again, but of course I did.

Anyway its great to hear peoples experiences of reliving pivotal moments from the games. I think I replayed UAKM not too long ago. There was quite a range of unusual mutant characters in that one. The graphics of Pandora Directive was quite a big jump ahead when you look at UAKM, but UAKM is still great of course and has alot of great moments. Is this the one with the Rusty the Clown body discovery and the Ardo hotel guard? I get a bit mixed up, its hard to remember how everything ties in with each other, but the fact that they do just makes the games more great and varied. Anyway alot of classic moments.

Sai: Yes, UaKM is the one where you find Rusty The Clown in the barrel of acid and where you see Ardo Newpop work at the Golden Gate Hotel (our own Aaron Conners actually played Ardo). But you're right - the graphics did vary quite a bit from UaKM to TPD but it was a great change that went along with the development. The graphics of TPD are absolutely stunning and I can't wait to get to play it once I have beaten UaKM ;)

Has anyone noticed mesh detail is a lot less in PD than in UAKM, specifically on Chandler...?
