Reuters: Online mystery games are back from the dead
That article highlights a point I have been saying for a few years now, and that is; with computers become more and more of a common household entertainment tool older generations of folks are beginning to look for more in their PCs than just solitaire, and what does the more mature gamer want? ...they don't want shooters or RTS games, they want Adventure and Mystery games.... games that making playing the computer a fun and non-complex experience.
Mature gamers like to take their time when playing games... it's a generation thing... and while the younger generations might be good at fast paces shooters and strategy games, peopel from my generation upwards appreciate a good, slow paced game to keep them comfotably entertained. And, as I said earlier, with consoles and PCs being pushed into a market which emphasises that it offers a new form of living room entertainment when people will want to play a living room kind of game, and this is bound to be something more cinematic than a shooter.
In about 5 years time I think we will see the market boom again as more folks start to notice the computer gaming industries potential for home entertainment rather than noticing it as something "just for the kids to go nuts on".
Fingers crossed anyway.
-Cub. =o)

Another 5 years?! Gees, that'll be year 15 since Overseer, will it not?
I agree with what you said Cub--and as those people who used to play lots of RTS and FPS games get older and have less time to dedicate to learning new platforms and keyboard commands, I think our genre will revive.
Now, what FORM will it be in is the question.
Oh, and let's not forget that the generation who grew up on the great story-based games are now coming of age to be developers on their own, many of whom (points to Cub) are quite skilled at film. A good combo, I think...
