Oh my god, Yes! How could I forget!...

Myst
Myst II: Riven
Myst III: Exile
Myst IV: Revelation
and soon Myst V: End of Ages (which I know I will love).

Can't beleive I overlooked these, and I was even playing Revelation last night... most visually stunning and most amazing graphics I have ever seen in ANY game.

It would probably have to be Grim Fandango and Beneath a Steel Sky.

grim fandango takes the cake for me. It was so full of character and style.
indiana jones fate of atlantis was the first adventure i played properly and completed and holds a special place in my nerdy heart.
monkey islands and sam n max and all those lucasarts classics were gold also.
The last express was also awesome for being bold and trying something a bit different and was a wonderful train trip:)
The gabriel knight trilogy is also gold.

the longest journey and syberia1/2 were probably the most recent good adventures i've played.

someone earlier mentioned the dame was loaded. was a good game at the time.....had a few flaws but was well worth the 5$ i paid:D

I became a fan of the genre on games like Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Full Throttle (and of course, The Pandora Directive).

Of late, I've found myself not playing any pure adventure games at all. Any reccomendations? If it might help, here are a few adventure games I didn't like.

Blade Runner
Syberia
X-Files

Actually have never played Uru... I did not like the whole transition to real time graphics becuase I knew when Uru was released real time graphics were not ready to bring justice to the Myst world... I also dislike the idea of playing a Myst game in 3rd person. What always made the MYST series great what that when Atrus would call you friend and look you in the eye you could beleive it, and you really felt like you were a part of the adventure... 3rd person in Myst would ruin that whole experience for me. Thats probably why I stayed clear of it.

However, I beleive with the upcomming End of Ages, real time is ready and it is not in 3rd person, so I am optimistic. Although, if End of Ages ends with a cliffhanger or a dodgy ending (like most have been as of late) I am going to scream!!! What always made the Tex Murphy games so great were to modd setting and edge of your seat introductions and spectacular endings that made you really feel like you have acheived the rewards of ending an amazing adventure. Most games these days just basically tell you to bigger of and play another game (at least, that how I see endings that don't really reward you for your hard work).

I never saw what people saw in the Myst games. I tried to play Riven once and just got bored and frustrated because there was nothing to do or follow.

Anyway, my favourites off the top of my head:
Day of the Tentacle
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Space Quest 4-5
Runaway (could've been better, here's hoping that the sequal is an improvement!)

Actually the Myst games are quite good with an exception or two (Uru, for example was not that good). What I've always loved about the Myst games is that they gave you a sense of wonder, kind of a magical alien world, and the games were just so polished that some of them were extremely beautiful and they would capture the eye instantly. Myst 3 - Exile was by far and away the best of the series and that was mainly on account of polish and high-production values. The latest Myst IV - Revelation was pretty good as well, though not as great as Riven or Exile.

Regarding my favorite adventure game, I would say Grim Fandango (surprise, surprise...). With an amazing collective of characters, personalities, beautiful art decoration, very film-noirish and stylish to the bone. I have never thought they could make a game featuring pure skeletons (oh, and one "obese" demon), but they managed to pull off the best adventure game of all-time with this one.

In 2nd comes in The Longest Journey, which was indeed very long, much on account of the enormous magnitude of the dialogue lines and speech. Again, we have a wonderful, magical world which just provides you with a long, enjoyable ride until you finish it.

My 3rd best adventure game is Gabriel Knight 3. Now here's a game so original, so intricate in detail, so well plotted... This one has the best game story of all-time (only Deus Ex, Mafia, NOLF and WC4 can come close to it regarding story). It has the biggest, most intricate and complex puzzle ever created in games, a puzzle that's stretched out along over half the game. An amazing plot of mystery, secret societies, the holy grail, freemasonry, vampires, Rennes le Chateau, and the mention of Jesus having a child through his bloodline (Dan Brown, anyone?).

Other games in my top ten adventure games:

4. Discworld Noir
5. Tex Murphy - The Pandora Directive
6. Tex Murphy - Overseer
7. Gabriel Knight 2 - The Beast Within
8. Tex Murphy - Under a Killing Moon
9. Myst 3 - Exile
10. Zork Grand Inquisitor

Other worthy adventure games that did not make the top ten:

Broken Sword 3 - The Sleeping Dragon
Ripper
Black Dahlia
Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Rose Tattoo
Curse of Monkey Island
Spycraft - The Great Game
Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis
Beneath a Steel Sky
The Journeyman Project 2 - Buried in Time
Realms of the Haunting
Obsidian
Riven - The Sequel to Myst
Myst IV - Revelation

I don't know if you realize that UrU had the option of playing in 1st person or 3rd person. You could toggle between them at any time.

I completed UrU, and enjoyed it somewhat. Mostly because it was so big and there was so much to explore. UrU Prime was pretty good, but the online stuff and Path of the Shell was just a bunch of hunting for spheres. Very boring.

Did you complete Revelation? I got about two-thirds through it (can't remember exactly where I left off.) Haven't played it in months.

Cubase wrote:Never played Phantasmagoria I or II... I have always wanted too though. I heard they were pretty freaky.

Dracula Unleashed eh? The title reminds me of the Lessslie Nielsen movie "Dracula: Dead and Loving it"

I liked Black Dahlia but the FMV interlacing just bugged me, especially when you have to play it at 640 X 480 on a 22" monitor! It's like watching the game through venitian blinds.

What I never played was Gabriel's Knight, Phantasmagoria (both) came with ads about it, but I never played it. It was one of those games like Tex's and Phantasmagoria's that had a lot of cds to go around. I never found it on the stores so I never played it. :(.

However I *did* play both Phantasmagorias, I liked the first better than the second, even though the second is scarier, scarier because it's gorier too (if there's such a word ;) ).
I have windows XP but both Phantasmagorias worked fine here. It's something to attempt if you dare ;).

I was never able to acquire a copy of ANY of the GK games, sadly, as they sounded very interesting. I do keep busy playing other games though, aside from good ol' tex:

Morrowind and Expansions
StarCraft and Expansion (ok..so not exactly adventure...but i found it exciting!)
Diablo I and especially II
Deus Ex (simply amazing game...not just your average FPS)!
Doom II and III (never got to play I)
Jack the Ripper wasn't too bad
Post Mortem was pretty fun
Star Wars Jedi Knight Series (Lightsabers..enough said)
Civilization III (many hours wast...spent on that game)

and let's see...were we to stick specifically to PC? Because as far as consoles go, I have only one favorite, the others I like are just good. And that my friends, is The Legend of Zelda series. Marvelous.

I haven't played any of the other games like Phantasmagoria, or Black Dahlia. Hm. I've played a couple of Myst games, and I could never really get into them!
