Joel wrote:Wow, talk about a seachange! Congratulations, Cub. That's definitely something I wouldn't have the guts to do. It's a shame that all communication here is in text as I would have loved to have heard the evolution of your accent from Australian to Californian.
BEST OF LUCK!
Hahaha! Thanks Joel!
Actually one of the first things my girlfriend said to me was: "You'd better not slip into the accent!" Becuase I have this knack for being able to pick up accents very quickly. Put me in aroom with someone with a strong British accent and I will start sounding very similar in about 2 minutes. The same goes for most types of American accents.
And thanks to everyone else for their words of support. Been doing a lot of research into places to live and it is all very daunting. Some people say one thing, and some say another. Oh well, it will be a nice challenge all the same.

so how do you go getting a green card, don't you have prove that your not taking someone's job or has that changed now.

Good point, plumgas. With the economy the way it is here in the good ol' USA, we have gone from the "land of opportunity" to the "land of flopportunity".

Green card are very hard to get... the best I can get at the moment is a sponsored working visa through the company I will be working for. That pretty much gives you all the same benefits, minus a few. But once you have that and have been working for a couple of years it helps the green card process significantly.

I heard Compton is a nice neighborhood =P
Just kidding.... Don't live there!
Stay away from anywhere near downtown and the airport too.
We went on vacation when I was 11, landed and in a half hour heard gunshots.
Anywhere else I think would be fine =)

Wonder if that has been done before =P

Man people are getting edgy aren't they. I assume they don't count the US as an at risk country (though lord knows we've got our share of crazies too).
I'd like to visit Australia someday. It's part of my plan to visit all 7 continents before I die. Right now I've got Australia and Antarctica to go. I'd like to see Asia again. Technically I was born there but left when I was a child so have no memories.
So please tell me is Australia as beautiful as people say?

You've got spiders the size of headcrabs! You can keep those mate!
I could never go to Australia because of my severe arachnophobia.
On a related note - I'm happy for your move! At least now I can come see yous!
