?? There were 2 editions on Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray. The theatrical versions, and then the extended cut. The 1st one was released last year. Most of us LOTR-philes got burned on buying 2 versions of the DVD's, so waited for the Extended (better imho) cut of the movie on HD.

The detail on the wide, panaromic shots, and the views of the maps, etc look STUNNING on Blu-Ray. Anything effects driven is much sharper, and crisp. And the sound is beautifully mastered.

As far as Dance with Dragons, it's the latest book by the man often referred to as the "American Tolkien" George RR Martin. Not a fair comparision in my opinion as just one of Martin's books in the series is longer as the entire LOTR story. Plus it is much richer in story, character, emotion and just gritty awesomeness. HBO just finished up a 10 hour mini series "A Game of Thrones based" on the 1st book. (and they had to cut out alot) Give the 1st book a try, it's one of my top 5 of all time!!

I downloaded LOTR from my paytv on demand service, watched most of the first one. i do remember I did try to watch it before but turned it off so I never watched the whole movie.

I was wondering what the best out of the three, & also the extended blu-ray seems to have 3 blu-ray & then several dvd's. Is that just full of crap or really worth having.
I did read the first blu-ray triolgy was a waste of money as it wasn't any better than the DVD disks. However I did read this version was just about the best picture quality you could possibly watch.

The theatrical versions are good for newbies, the extended version I suggest for fan girls and boys and those who really dug the theatricals. 4 hours for one movie is a lot to ask for someone who is new to it.

I was very into David (and Leigh) Eddings and some of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's stuff when I was younger. It's been a while since I've read a good fantasy book.

David (and Leigh) Eddings got me started on reading back in the mists of the early 90's.

From there on out it went on with Tolkien, Stephen King, Robert Jordan, Arthur C. Doyle, Agatha Christie and Stephen R. Donaldson. Then later on I discovered Robert Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Lastly I stumbled across George R. R. Martin.

I decided to reread Eddings' Elenium-series about two years back, and looked him up on Wikipedia to see if he was doing anything new. Sadly, he had passed away less than a week earlier. That bummed me out quite a bit. His wife had died a few years before that. I reread the stories of Sparhawk in their memory.

Oh. And Jen? I've finished A Game of Thrones now, and am into A Clash of Kings.

And Fred. GOTCHA! I've spent the last 3 days reading bootleg pictures of the next book, due out Tuesday.

I couldn't rate them. They're one big story and each are great in their own way.

The one thing that hasn't stood the test of time for me though is the scene in FOTR where they run into the mines of moria and you can easily see where the blue screen starts and ends from the boulders and the flat images behind.

And LOVE the new photos of the hobbit! I can't wait for it to come out, even though I expect it will be nothing like the book.

I read my first Stephen King book last year. It. I was blown away. The movie is great and terrified me as a child...but the words in the book just freaked the hell out of me as an adult.
