Tex Murphy Pentathlon!!

Bjyman wrote:Yeah the GK marathon also inspired me. The biggest concern I have right now is figuring out the technical part. I wouldn't want Big Finish to promote it if it turns out I can't get it running or I'm not able to have a good enough quality flowing stream. If I do this it will probably be a weekend and in the middle or end of the Kickstarter.
Yeah best to do some test streams maybe first. Theres lots of guides on the net to use and also Twitch has its own forums for support http://support.twitch.tv/
The short summary of how to use FME with Twitch:
http://www.twitch.tv/broadcast go there, download the FME config file, and put it in FME (File -> Open). Once that is done you just gotta do some settings, set up your input (capture card, or desktop capture via a program) and you should be ready to stream
Most these fundraising streams seem to have been done as a "final push" thing towards the middle or end so no worries about the timing.
On the technical note it sounds like I need VhScrCap.
Yeah seems people refer to VhScrCap as a driver for your computer which enables you to capture the screen for Adobe Flash Encoder to pick up on and stream.

You can get VhScrCap from Xsplit's website (same maker). However people say the newer versions have a XSplit watermark if you use Adobe FME instead of XSplit with it. People seem to suggest using an older version of VhScrCap from before the watermarking was added. Some link to this one for an older version:
http://download.cnet.com/VH-Screen-Capt ... 36367.html

Alternatively there is the freeware SCFH DS software instead of VhScrCap. I think this is the direct link:
http://mosax.sakura.ne.jp/yp4g/fswiki.c ... F041%2Ezip

However it is a Japanese software so requires an English guide which can be found here:

Edit: I also have two Tex books I could hold up in a pic.
Maybe you can ask to borrow redcat's cat too to hold

Thanks if that doesn't work I may give in and pay XSplit.

A cat? How about a geigger?
Also sometimes you might have a problem streaming games in fullscreen mode (just something I hear people say whilst broadcasting). If so you may have to set the game you're playing to Windowed or force it. Googling the GOG games it seems you can run Mean Streets or Martian memorandum windowed (by doing Alt+Enter). Also people mention being able to play UAKM and PD windowed using the GOG files (maybe same way or some settings). Dunno about Overseer though. plumgas mentions on this thread they play it windowed but dunno if thats using the GOG version:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/tex_murphy_ ... de_in_win7

Looking on Gog some mention selecting the "graphic mode setup" tool and selecting OpenGL for some settings to adjust.

Maybe someone here knows if there is any issues running any of the GOG games windowed?

EDIT:
Heh a geigger would be appropriate though if I remember right they were cute but dangerous... Guess that is similar to some cats though :D

Ok I seem to be making some progress. I seem to have input and I watched the GK livestream and I was able to view it better than I thought so the reverse should be true. On Adobe Flash it doesn't seem to like my server url: rtmp://localhost/live on output. What am I supposed to put instead of this if I want to use TwitchTV?
It seems you'd put a link to one of Twitch's streaming servers. According to this FAQ on Twitch there is a small app you can use called Ingest Ranker which tells which server is closest to you for best results. Here is the download:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33446/twitch/ingest-ranker.zip

I tried it and what happens is (after extracting the zip files), run ingest-ranker.exe and it says "Testing servers" for a good while. Then it tells you 3 server urls in order of what is best. I think you can ignore that the suggested URLs say Justin.tv (as Twitch.tv is basically a gaming-specific extension of Justin.tv and seems to use similar servers).

There is also a full list of server URLs and what city they're for on that FAQ under Broadcasting Questions and "My stream is lagging".

Well I got Channel Output and my new problem is Input Resolution. I set my resolution to full screen on VH MultiCam studio and now I can't access the options on it because its so big. Due to resolution problems I'm going to have to go with XSplit because it looks like it takes the resolution straight from the game.
Try VhScrCap (mentioned in the links/guides above) instead of VH MultiCam when selecting which device to use in Adobe FME. Then with VHScrCap you can select a screen region rather than just the whole screen.

Here's a guide which mentions how to select a screen region or window with Adobe FME and VHScrCap. I see a lot of people broadcasting games doing that dragging a red outline out to select a window shown in this video. It also talks about settings for FME but for the VHScrCap bit thats after 9 minutes.

Note: he says in the video the things in VHScrCap like "Left" and "Right", "Width" and "height"aren't important but I think people find those useful for if they select a screen region and then want to adjust it slightly afterwards (e.g. moving it slightly left if the capture is showing a bit of something you don't want in the frame). I'm sure there might be other guides for VHScrCap and such though about those sorts of things.

I'm not sure the installer game me that program. The only thing I see that directory is SDK.bat and when I run that it just closes. I'll check the guides.

You mean the VhScrCap thingy? If you got it from here:
http://download.cnet.com/VH-Screen-Capt ... 36367.html
I found it under:
C:\Program Files\HmelyoffLabs\VHScrCap

then its VHScrCapDlg.exe

(p.s. we posted at the same time  just incase you missed the other post I made regarding width/height/left/right for if you manage to get the VHScrCap thingy working that is).

I think I'm able to have it where I can select the window resolution by dragging a square now. The next step is to test this individually with all 5 Tex games. I want to run the games in windows instead of full screen so I can view potential chat comments while playing.

Also is it recommended to stream wireless or not? If I go wireless I could disconnect. I have those occasional down periods. However if I don't go wireless and use a landline. Incoming phone calls could possibly disconnect me.

Oh I remember those days (don't miss them)... No wired broadband connection available where you're at thats separate to your phone line (I don't use wireless much, mainly wired)? Doesn't your wireless internet provider also do wired connections? Bit extreme maybe but if the phone connection is your only stable choice because your wireless is bad I guess you could contact anyone you think might call you and let them know your phone will be unplugged during that time period and to contact via mobile, email, etc. instead.

I guess it really just depends on what you think has the best upload/download and overall stability. It's individual to each person. You could also ask on http://support.twitch.tv and maybe ask your internet provider about stability, or google to see if others on your same internet package have tried broadcasting perhaps.

Here's some guide which talks about quality (bandwidth etc.) for streaming (it does suggest that wireless might be risky depending on the network):

I'm not sure. I always thought the landline and wired were one in the same. The possibility that it may not be is interesting.

Ooh I see. Yeah they can be separate, I would expect most modern internet packages to have it this way. Definitely worth asking your internet service provider. I hope it is separate, that would be great :)

Ok I have a wireless router. So by being wired you mean using an ethernet cord to connect the computer to the router?

Due to the configuration in my house I may need a 120' cord. If I get one would the length of the wire be so long that it defeats the point of being wired? I think I'm going to call the people handling my wireless up.
