In the Rolling Stone Mag, they also said they were going to widely expand on the history of the dwarves so that we actually see what motivates them, they will expand on the the war between the goblins and dwarves and why they hate each other so much too.

In the book Thorin is a big grump. We will get to see why is so ornery as we get a glimpse of his history, making him much more able to sympathize with.


We also get the Necromancer stuff and Gandalf's Quest that is pretty much missing in the book.


In the book, it pretty much goes, "hey where is Gandalf again???" then he magically shows up in the nick of time to save the day on several occasions.. In these movies.... we get to see where he is going and what he is doing, which was widely elaborated on in the Appendices of LOTR and the History of Middle Earth series and the Silmarillion.

They called it the super version of the Hobbit.

This is going to be epic I think.

If you do talk your Drive-In into running a Hobbit Weekend, where they have all 3 parts of the Hobbits as their weekend showing, I'd make the drive to MD to see the Hobbit trilogy on the Biggest Movie Screen in North America... 52 Feet Tall by 120 Feet Wide...(keep us posted)

As far as where the break points between movies will be, the titles should be clues: Part Two is subtitled, "The Desolation of Smaug" so expecting the first movie to end maybe just before they get to the mountain, the second movie will be about the dragon (and probably the extra material not in the Hobbit book), and the third movie think I heard will be subtitled, "Battle of the Five Armies" so expect a lot of fighting and closure.

I'm going to see the first part right after it releases...just in case the Mayans were right and the world ends on 12/21/12.

No drive-ins for me. I'm going to see The Hobbit in glorious IMAX 3D (with reserved seating). We have one of the largest IMAX screens in the world. Avatar was spectalular.

Where are you located???
Will do... They just had their final weekend of the season, so I'll talk to them when I go next summer, see if it is something they'll be interested in for the Spring/Summer of 2014... It will also depend on how long they make each film... There is only so much time in the night and they usually like to wrap up around 2am... The latest I remember ever being there was about 2:30am, not counting their Dusk-till-Dawn events... Of course they can't start until Sunset, which during the summer isn't until almost 8pm...
So if I had to guess, each movie won't be able to be longer than about 2 hours each... They have to have Intermission in between each film for people to frequent the Snack Bar and whatnot...
So the first movie would begin around 8:15pm {after previews and stuff}, 2 hours or so puts you around 10:15-10:30pm, 2nd movie begins around 10:45pm or so, putting you close to 1am, so it would be around 3am or so before all is said and done... They might do it...

But if what I just read is true, the first Hobbit film is going to be 2 hours and 40 minutes long... If the other 2 will be roughly the same, I'm not sure the Drive-In will do it, unless they can be convinced to do it on their Dusk-Till-Dawn movie event... I mean that's 8 hours of film to watch if they all turn out to be the same length... Even if you ran without previews and minimum Intermissions that still puts you well past 4am...
I'll still talk to them about it, because I'd love to see it at the Drive-In... But after thinking about it in more detail, I'm not going to hold my breath too much for it...

The 3rd movie is titled "There and Back Again"...

As for the 2nd movie, this is all that is written for the Plot information on IMDB:

"After successfully crossing over (and under) the Misty Mountains, Thorin and Company must seek aid from a powerful stranger before taking on the dangers of Mirkwood Forest--without their Wizard. If they reach the human settlement of Lake-town it will be time for the hobbit Bilbo Baggins to fulfill his contract with the dwarves. The party must complete the journey to Lonely Mountain and burglar Baggins must seek out the Secret Door that will give them access to the hoard of the dragon Smaug. And, where has Gandalf got off to? And what is his secret business to the south?"

Here is what is written for the Plot information for the 3rd movie {which is very vague}:

"Bilbo, Gandalf and the Dwarfs are in Smaug's lair, but will they get their Gold and return home safely?"

It sounds like Mirkwood, the River town and Smaug are all going to be combined into the 2nd film, which means we're probably looking at an almost 4 hour film... Not too mention this is the film I suspect we'll be seeing a majority of the Necromancer material as well... So the 2nd Film will probably end with the Dragon being shot and killed and the Dwarfs entering the mountain to see their riches... An awful lot being crammed in the 3rd film if my suspicions are correct...
Then the 3rd movie will open with the townsfolk demanding equal share from the Dwarfs and the Battle of the Five Armies will commence...

We know what motivates them... The Dwarfs use to own and mine The Lonely Mountain and then the Dragon came and ran them out killing many of them and stealing all their treasure... So they set out to take it back and kill the Dragon... How much more motivation is needed???
As for bad blood with the Goblins, does one really need a reason to have bad blood with a Goblin??? lol

Yes, I believe the Necromancer battle was disclosed in an interview back when they announced it would be 3 films, if I'm not mistaken... I'm rather glad they are expanding on that a bit... It always pissed me off that there wasn't more information about the whole Necromancer ordeal... While this won't be Tolkien's portrayal of it, it will still be nice to have some, closure {for lack of a better term} to the whole affair...
