There actually was a freeware remake of KingsQuest. It's called KingsQuest VGA (you can google it).
I downloaded it and gave it a go. It won't blow you away in terms of graphics/sound, but it's been updated to the point of definitely being playable on modern PCs.
Depending on your nostalgia factor you'll either love it or you won't. For me, I have great memories of those old games, but I forgot how frustrating those early interfaces can be. I find, spoiled by modern games, that the interface detracts too much from the experience.
That's one reason I love the Tex games so much. The interface still easily holds up to modern games. A graphics and sound update (7.1 dolby?), a little added content, a little editing, and it would be awesome.

Sierra redid All the King's Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry games, so they all play on Modern PCs... You can get the King's Quest collection for under 20 bucks, along with the rest of them, each under 20 bucks...
I play through them every now and then just like I do with Tex...
